Teen dating violence
In teen dating violence, one partner tries to maintain power and control over the
other through abuse. This abuse may include emotional, physical or sexual abuse, as well as isolation,
threats, intimidation, harassment and minimization, denial and blame. Statistics show that one in three
teenagers in the United States has experienced violence in a dating relationship, with most victims being
girls or young women. Teen dating violence crosses all racial, economic and social lines. Girls may
believe that their boyfriend’s jealousy, possessiveness and even physical abuse is “romantic”; that the
abuse is “normal” because their friends are also being abused; and that there is no one to ask for help.
